Most homeowners think about gutters, not really the downspouts. But the downspouts are the part that actually gets the water away from the house. Gutters collect the rain. Downspouts send it down and out. If there aren’t enough of them, the gutter fills up fast.
Then water starts spilling over the sides.
You see this a lot in Clearwater after a heavy storm. Gutters look fine… but they’re overflowing anyway. That usually means the system doesn’t have enough places for water to drain. At CR Gutters, Inc.™, we check this all the time when homeowners call about overflowing gutters. A lot of the time, adding one more downspout solves the problem.
There’s a general rule installers use when planning downspouts.
Usually one downspout for every 30 to 40 feet of gutter.
That spacing gives rainwater enough places to exit the system before the gutter fills up. Water runs through the gutter channel, reaches the downspout, then drains safely toward the ground. Works pretty well for normal rain. But Clearwater storms are rarely “normal.”
When a big storm rolls through, water pours off the roof fast. If the gutter run is long and there’s only one downspout at the end, all that water has to travel a long way before it drains. Sometimes it can’t keep up.
Florida rain hits hard. Especially during storm season. When water pours off the roof quickly, gutters fill up fast. If there aren’t enough downspouts, the water just sits there. Then it spills over the edge.
You might notice it right in the middle of the gutter run. Water pouring out even though the downspout is technically working.
Adding an extra downspout helps with things like:
Homes with larger roofs or long gutter sections usually benefit from this.
Sometimes the gutter system technically works. But it struggles during heavy rain.
You might see signs like:
It’s not just how many downspouts you have. Where they’re placed matters too. Water naturally flows toward certain low points in the gutter. Downspouts should be placed where water collects most. That helps water leave the system faster.
Good placement helps:
Adding a downspout is usually a small job. Much cheaper than replacing gutters.
For many Clearwater homes, a new downspout runs about $150 to $400. Price depends on the house height and where it needs to be installed.
